The first Barwon Cleaning Services Pro-am has been and gone, and it was an outstanding success. From the course, to the clubhouse, the accolades from the professionals that played were very heartening and we cannot wait to host again next year. My congratulations to the Pro-am committee, I and the club as a whole were very proud of the event that was produced, thank you.
The winners of the day were professionals, Brad Lamb and Deyen Lawson tied with 66. Leighton Lyle ran third with 68. For us mere mortals, East Framlingham member won with 38 and local gal Susan Plummer took the ladies amateur win with 37. Too many minor trophies were presented to mention here as was the groaning trophy table at presentation time.
Last week the ladies led the weekly comps as the usual day was used to prepare the course for the Pro-am. Monday saw Chris Cunningham win a monthly medal with a nice 73 nett. A grade winner was Sonia Dall with 74. C grade was Margie Mascoll with 77. NTP’s were Yvonne Casey, Dorothy Emerson and Beth Peterson. Val Carter won putting with 30 and ProPins went to Beth Peterson and Jill Barker.
Tuesday men played Stableford with Lee James 40, Lloyd Shepherd, 38, Len Elder 38 and Ron Williams 36. NTP’s were claimed by Barry Benson, Paul Smelter and Curtis Massey. Friday, 9 holes event was ladies winner Margaret Kennedy, so good to see Marg on the winners list, well done. Men’s winner was Andrew Fletcher with 39.
Saturday members stroke, with the men having a 4 way playoff for the medal from last week. Winner was Richard Hassett. Glenn Hinch excelled in A grade with a fine 66 but so did Carmel Said in D grade who claimed trophy of the day on a c/b. B grade was Keith Giles 69 and C winner was David Robjohns with 70. Andy Brough, Stuart Cairney and Rodney Allen shot the NTPs and Jeremy Owens took the ProPin.
Ladies also played stroke and very happy to see Jeanette Barclay returning a terrific 70 nett off 12 with Ladies SWDLGA pennant just around the corner, and her coming into some good form. Helen Barry took the B Grade section with 73, another good score. Jeanette also shot an NTP as did Maureen Hogan. Ange Royal scored the ProPin and on a day that many members were cursing the greens still in Pro-am condition, Sue Hazell won the putting comp with a very credible 29 putts, much to the member’s amazement.
Then Sunday, in full long weekend mode had a huge number of golfers take to the beautiful fairways of Portarlington. One of those was a visitor from Ballarat GC, Jack Wilson with a fantastic 5 up, with next best Martin Talbot with 2 up.
Coming up on Monday March 26th is great Charity day for the Geelong-Surfcoast Regional Veteran Centre, under the banner of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia and the RSL.
