Portarlington Golf Club: February 21 2012
Tuesday men started with a bang, none better than Neal Keskinen leading the way with a 66 nett amongst some other impressive scores.
Tuesday was stableford and the winner in A Grade was Carole Mayne with 40 points.
Competition stepped up this week with the first of the SWDLGA events at Portarlington, and a team at the GMV guest event at Box Hill.
The medley fields are over and it’s back to men’s day Wednesday and ladies on Thursday – happily for many!
Tuesday was Ladies Opening Day with 90 ladies competing, most of whom stayed on for lunch and the first presentations of the year.
The Sands is hosting the 2012 Ladies Challenge Bowl, which has seen entries from all over Victoria.
An extremely warm Tuesday greeted the men for a Stableford round on Tuesday. Linton Newitt relished the heat, returning 40 points and taking A Grade.
It was a week with a lot of eagles, and there were two hole in ones on Australia Day from Geoff Dean on the 16th and visitor Neil Burrage on the 13th.
Members have discovered new putting strokes from Kevin and have been practicing their new techniques during competition.
There has been a lot of activity at The Sands with the “Battle of the Barwon”, super clinics and some terrific scoring by our younger members.
As the weather performs, we are still pumping lots of happy golfers around the course.
Emily’s just aceProfessional golfers might receive a prize when achieving a hole-in-one, but Emily Powell’s reward was better – bragging rights over her dad.
On Tuesday, the winner for the Ladies was Marjorie Youings (Bacchus Marsh) (40) with +9, nice to see a visitor saluting in one of our competitions.
Wednesday was a big mixed field with some very good scores from quite a few. Michael Elmore had the best score for the day with 6 up winning C Grade.

The inaugural Barwon Cleaning Supplies’ Portarlington Golf Club Pro-Am is shaping up as a day not to be missed.
With a great week just past, it seems the golfing gods were kind up to a point.
What a week it has been with our Ladies Challenge Cup, Ladies Opening Day, huge fields for our men’s competitions and some special guests.
Tuesday turned out to be one of those days when only the brave dared to play in the extremely bad weather.
The season has officially started after Opening Day on Sunday. It was a great idea to start early, as noon was the peak of the wind gusts.
As we enter February we wave our visitors goodbye, happy in the knowledge that there has been much golf enjoyed at Port.

The summer weather has finally arrived and Tuesday was no exception. Forty-seven ladies started but only the brave and red-faced finished in the heat.
It was another dry windy week and the fairways are giving players lots of run – if you keep on them.
It’s been another busy week in the pro shop with bumper fields on competition days and many visitors from interstate and overseas.
What a great time to be a golfer at Portarlington, with players enjoying all that Port has to offer and great golf from members and visitors.
The New Year has arrived and many of us will have checked the handicap reduction for the last 12 months, and made a resolution to improve in 2012.
